Five Tips for Improving Body Image


Body image is a complex and multifaceted concept that refers to how we see, feel, and think about our physical appearance, as well as how we perceive and evaluate the bodies of others. A positive body image is associated with better mental health, self-esteem, and overall well-being, while a negative body image can lead to anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and other health problems. However, improving body image is not always easy, especially in a culture that promotes unrealistic and harmful beauty standards. Here are some tips and strategies that can help:


1. Focus on function, not looks:

Instead of judging your body based on how it looks, try to appreciate it for what it can do. Our bodies are amazing machines that allow us to move, breathe, learn, create, and connect with others. By focusing on the functional aspects of your body, you can shift your attention away from appearance and towards functionality and empowerment.


2. Practice self-compassion and body respect:

Be kind, gentle, and understanding towards yourself, especially when you're feeling self-conscious or critical. Treat yourself as you would treat a good friend who is struggling with body image issues. Acknowledge your feelings, but don't let them define you. Remember that you are more than your body. It's also important to remember that just like moods fluctuate, our body image fluctuates. Even people with a really healthy body image have good days and bad days when it comes to how they think and feel about their appearance. Even on a bad body image day, however, you can still have consistent body respect by nourishing it, moving it, and taking care of it.


3. Challenge negative thoughts:

If you notice yourself having negative thoughts about your body, try to challenge them with evidence-based reasoning. For example, if you think "I'm so fat and ugly", ask yourself "Is this thought based on facts or feelings? What evidence do I have to support or refute it? What would I say to a friend who expressed this thought?"


4. Surround yourself with positive influences:

Surround yourself with people, media, and environments that promote Health At Every Size (HAES), body positivity, diversity, and inclusivity. Avoid or limit exposure to sources that reinforce negative body image, such as social media, magazines, or TV shows that promote unrealistic beauty standards or perpetuate body shame. Do a digital detox of media that gets you into an unhealthy or comparative mindset in regards to your body.


5. Take care of your body:

Taking care of your body can help you feel better about yourself and improve your physical health. This includes eating a balanced and varied diet, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and seeking medical care when needed. However, remember that self-care is not about punishment or restriction, but about nourishment and enjoyment.



Improving body image is a journey, not a destination. It takes time, effort, and patience to overcome negative beliefs and habits that have been ingrained in us by society and culture. However, by practicing self-compassion, challenging negative thoughts, surrounding ourselves with positive influences, focusing on function, and taking care of our bodies, we can cultivate a more positive and realistic relationship with our physical selves.
